Hi Lee,
I feel well qualified to answer your question here as I have just changed all of my policies!
The truth is, I'm afraid rather frustrating. Most underwriters consider flying in light aircraft as a dangerous or extreme sport. It doesn't seem to matter wether you do this for a living as I do, or just for recreational purposes. If you don't tell them (the underwriters) that you regularly fly in light aircraft, they may not pay out if you were critically injured or killed in one - something your wife might be irritated about!
I am a professional pilot and spend a large proportion of my daylight hours teaching aerobatics. To the uninformed this might be easy to dismiss as a very dangerous way to spend my time. However, for those of us that know the truth, it is clear that I should be far more scared driving home at the end of the day. Sadly though, this common sense thinking is not terribly well propogated within the world of finance and insurance. Therefore, you can expect a loading of at least 150% and more if you regularly fly light aircraft.
Truthfully, this really makes me mad... Why should I pay so much more than people who work in more dangerous occupations than I just because my underwriters choose to be ignorant to the facts? Particularly when I spend every minute of every day trying to be as safe as I can!
So, my advice is tell them and make sure they are aware. It will hurt you more in the pocket but at least you'll be properly covered.
Best wishes,
Luke
