Question:  Is it possible to study for, sit and pass the CPL theory tests prior to having any flying experience?  My thinking; knock off exams whilst still working, do CPL flying when retired.

Oh....and if it is, and I passed the exams here (UK) would I be able to take that pass with me to Australia and do the flying there?

Many thanks........

Hi Barkers,

IIRC, the CPL exams need to be done within 2 years and the pass remains valid for a further 3 years.

You need to have valid passes , Class 1 medical and flight test pass at the date of applying for your CPL.

It may have changed a bit, but probably not very much.

The reference document is JAR-FCL, downloadable from the JAA site.

JAR partial qualifications will not have any relevance to an Australian CPL. Converting a full JAR CPL to an Australian one would be more straightforward though it will involve a bit more testing.

It would be a good idea to get PPL out of the way first before diving headlong into CPL stuff.

You need to hold an ICAO PPL before you can sit either CPL or ATPL exams.

You need to hold at least an ICAO Private Pilot License (PPL) before you attend a JAA ATPL ground school.

You have to have held your PPL for 3 months before sitting any ATPL exams. If this isn't the case, the CAA will write you(and your CGI) a letter informing you that your application to sit the exams has been refused.

As far as I'm aware, most ground schools will take your word that you hold a PPL for the reasons I've just mentioned but i don't think you will have a reference number (same as your licence number) until your PPL comes back but I could be wrong about that.

By all means if you can get study material then you can begin studying and gain some pre knowledge!!!

Go to ebay and have a look, here is a link just click    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Oxford-Aviation-Training-ATPL-Manuals-FULL-SET-OF-14_W0QQitemZ330254245120QQihZ014QQcategoryZ4783QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
