PPL

Hi all,
Ive always been interested in flying and have recently joined the British Army but im now thinking about getting my PPL while im still in training. Ive read that it will cost around £4500 to get it and around 45 hours is that about right? Also is it best to have the cash already saved up or just to pay as you go if you know what i mean. Im currently based just outside Reading could anyone suggest any good flying clubs in the area?

Thanks

Shifty,

Do not pay money up front (even if you are offered a discount). There are more than enough Flying Clubs/Schools that have cash flow problems and quite a few go under. Always pay as you go. Regarding the hours to attain your licence, the JAR PPL(A) is 45hrs minimum and the NPPL(SSEA) is 32hrs minimum (+ flight tests). The average I believe to get up to Skills Test standard is about 56hrs for either of them (it depends on your learning ability). Base your costings around this. My NPPL(SSEA) took me  62hrs. I hope this helps.

The average realistic cost for a JAR PPL license in the UK these days is roughly £6500.  When you calculate and read basic £4500 its total crap :)

With soaring fuel prices for one that figure is way off. Secondly the equipment and all the books is at least £200 and most importantly its very very suprising if you complete your license within 45 hours.  As said above its more likely to be 60 hours or so.  Adding to this, paying for your skills test, exams and all the bits in between, wack on another £350!

I also live near reading - i learned at west london aero club in maidenhead - but also Blackbushe has 2 schools ; Blackbushe aviation is probably the better (also known as Cabair).

i would budget for about 60 hours to get your ppl.

Good luck

Hi Shifty

Having passed my Skills Test on Saturday (Hooray!) I decided to tot up exactly how much the PPL had cost me. I did it over 2 years, and completed it in 50h25min (including the 2h20m Skills test). I believe this a little quicker than most students, especially when one is only flying every 2 or 3 weeks.

The grand total - wait for it - was £10,771. That includes all aircraft (PA28) hire and 48hrs instruction, a 2nd hand pair of Dave Clark 13-4 headphones off e-bay (£128), books, maps and nav equipment (£240), the RT practical exam (£80), the Skills Test (£150), the application for the licence to CAA (£168) and the Class 2 medical (about £150). I was training at a low-to-mid price flying school at Shoreham (paying as I went) - and although Shoreham landing fees are pretty expensive compared to some other fields, they don't make that much of a difference. I also completed my circuit training before Shoreham started charging for go-arounds.

What I haven't included is any ground school classes - I was lucky enough to get 50 hours of classes for free, and of course the fuel cost of getting to and from the airfield, including those days when you pitch up only to have to make the decision that the weather is rubbish, so go home (Didn't happen too often thankfully).

That's just the reality - I hope it doesn't put you off completely. I absolutely love flying and so consider every penny to be well spent - after all, you can't take it with you. If you train in a Cessna and at a field with a FISO or A/G it should be a little cheaper.

Cheers

Nik

PS: I'm 42 by the way - and boy did the grey cells battle to get back into study mode.

Shifty, look into going to the US, I took mine there end of 2005, passed within 45 hours and that was £4500 including a night qualification, all books, exams, RT, skills test and housing and flights, and besides all the US bashing that goes on I had a 1 hour flight with an instructor upon my return and was signed off.
