All real aviators should try gliding

Just wanted to support our power-less fellows! Actually I did a red-letter day aerotow trial glider flight a couple of years ago, and as well as really enjoying it, I can truly say it has helped with my flying skills: you absolutely have to use bootfulls of rudder to coordinate turns, which is very good for developing the general flying skills. Also, you get a much more honest appreciation of the medium in which we fly. Also, I was at the time rather freaked out about steep turns because of an incident in the past - in gliders, steep turns are bread and butter flying. I quickly lost my fear of steep turns, especially bearing in mind I had to fly the plane, with no engine controls to help me nor worry about.

So I strongly encourage all power-pilots to at least have a go in a glider. I intend to do more sometime before too long.

Lindsay

Thanks Lindsay. I loved gliding when I was in the Air Cadets, really miss it. Now in the early stages of my PPL, although I would love to take up gliding in the future too.

Does anybody have an idea of any civilian glidng clubs in the Edinburgh/Lothians area? I know there is one at Loch Leven in Fife but I was wondering if there was anything closer at hand.

What's the difference between an Airbus pilot and a Boeing pilot?

The Boeing pilot knows what his plane is doing.

no paul, the only gliding club down there is Portmoak, Loch Leven - The Scottish Gliding Centre (http://www.scottishglidingcentre.co.uk/)

it is a thriving club though and only about 30 minutes drive from Edinburgh
